Unlucky,numbers
In Western countries, such numbers as 13 or 666 are considered
unlucky numbers under the influence of Christianity. In Japan, the numbers four and nine are disliked.
The reason lies in the sound four and nine have. four is called "yon" or "shi", and the sound "shi" evokes "death". Because four and death are the homonym in Japanese.
Nine is called "kyuu" or "ku ", and the sound "ku" evokes "pain". Because nine and pain are the homonym in Japanese.
For these reasons, the numbers four and nine are regarded as unlucky numbers in Japan.
